“This truck is really big,” Amber said to Katy as she pulled up outside the gorgeous Skaneateles Yacht and Country Club. It was a huge white sweeping building, with a restaurant, pool, tennis courts, golf course, and marina. The place screamed of class and money, neither of which Amber had. She felt uncomfortably out of place. Many of her father’s boats were kept in that marina, she thought with a certain amount of pride.

“My daddy’s big,” Katy responded without hesitation. “He sometimes works here. He doesn’t belong, but your daddy does. You’re lucky.”

“Between you and me, I’d rather be at the lake.” Amber scrunched up her nose at Katy who giggled.

Amber parked the truck in the biggest spot she could find, terrified of doing any damage to it. Shane had insisted she take the truck because he was parked behind her, and Katy’s booster seat was already strapped inside of it. Amber was used to her bug. This truck was massive in comparison. While Shane was over six foot, she was barely over five. She felt like she needed a booster seat as well.

Climbing out, she walked around and helped Katy down from the running boards. They headed inside the impressive building together and found the spot where they were to sign up for the cake baking contest. She got several looks as the members realized she was the illegitimate daughter of James Cavanaugh. Small town news traveled fast, especially from such an upstanding member. People were curious, and even more so because she had young Katy Parker with her. Driving Shane’s truck had even more tongues wagging, making Amber realize that maybe this wasn’t such a great idea.

She grabbed Katy’s hand and hurried back outside. She hadn’t taken more than ten steps when a woman spoke from right behind her. “Excuse me,” she said. “Who are you?”

Amber stopped walking, gripped Katy’s hand tighter, and slowly turned around. The woman was around her age, a sophisticated pretty darker blonde, and obviously came from money with the way she was dressed in designer clothes.

“I’m sorry, but you’re the one who approached me. I should be asking who you are.” Amber smiled politely to take the bite out of her words.

The woman seemed to catch herself, and visibly worked to make everything calm about her appearance. “My apologies.” She held out her perfectly moisturized and manicured hand. “My name is Candice Longoria.” Undoubtedly her dark blond came from an expensive bottle and a hairdresser Amber could never afford.

She shook the woman’s hand as the woman eyed Katy in a territorial fashion. Katy moved closer to Amber, who wrapped her arm around her and hugged her tighter.

“I’m Amber Delaney.” She’d be damned if she would say it was nice to meet her.

Candice puckered her brow. “But I thought you were James Cavanaugh’s daughter?”

“I am.”

Her eyes widened in feigned surprise. “Ohhhh, I see.”

Amber’s jaw tightened, realizing instantly she was in for a battle with this one. “What can I do for you, Ms. Longoria?” she asked, thinking, let the games begin.
