âThis truck is really big,â Amber said to Katy as she pulled up outside the gorgeous Skaneateles Yacht and Country Club. It was a huge white sweeping building, with a restaurant, pool, tennis courts, golf course, and marina. The place screamed of class and money, neither of which Amber had. She felt uncomfortably out of place. Many of her fatherâs boats were kept in that marina, she thought with a certain amount of pride.
âMy daddyâs big,â Katy responded without hesitation. âHe sometimes works here. He doesnât belong, but your daddy does. Youâre lucky.â
âBetween you and me, Iâd rather be at the lake.â Amber scrunched up her nose at Katy who giggled.
Amber parked the truck in the biggest spot she could find, terrified of doing any damage to it. Shane had insisted she take the truck because he was parked behind her, and Katyâs booster seat was already strapped inside of it. Amber was used to her bug. This truck was massive in comparison. While Shane was over six foot, she was barely over five. She felt like she needed a booster seat as well.
Climbing out, she walked around and helped Katy down from the running boards. They headed inside the impressive building together and found the spot where they were to sign up for the cake baking contest. She got several looks as the members realized she was the illegitimate daughter of James Cavanaugh. Small town news traveled fast, especially from such an upstanding member. People were curious, and even more so because she had young Katy Parker with her. Driving Shaneâs truck had even more tongues wagging, making Amber realize that maybe this wasnât such a great idea.
She grabbed Katyâs hand and hurried back outside. She hadnât taken more than ten steps when a woman spoke from right behind her. âExcuse me,â she said. âWho are you?â
Amber stopped walking, gripped Katyâs hand tighter, and slowly turned around. The woman was around her age, a sophisticated pretty darker blonde, and obviously came from money with the way she was dressed in designer clothes.
âIâm sorry, but youâre the one who approached me. I should be asking who you are.â Amber smiled politely to take the bite out of her words.
The woman seemed to catch herself, and visibly worked to make everything calm about her appearance. âMy apologies.â She held out her perfectly moisturized and manicured hand. âMy name is Candice Longoria.â Undoubtedly her dark blond came from an expensive bottle and a hairdresser Amber could never afford.
She shook the womanâs hand as the woman eyed Katy in a territorial fashion. Katy moved closer to Amber, who wrapped her arm around her and hugged her tighter.
âIâm Amber Delaney.â Sheâd be damned if she would say it was nice to meet her.
Candice puckered her brow. âBut I thought you were James Cavanaughâs daughter?â
âI am.â
Her eyes widened in feigned surprise. âOhhhh, I see.â
Amberâs jaw tightened, realizing instantly she was in for a battle with this one. âWhat can I do for you, Ms. Longoria?â she asked, thinking, let the games begin.
